For those of us (myself included) who have not tried piercing, it might be helpful to know a little more about it. For example, what sort of thickness do piercers normally turn down to? Are the woods that are particularly well suited to this, and woods that are not suited to it?

These piecing cutters will cut wood the full length of the cutter although i would not sugest doing this with the 1mm or 1.5mm as it will lead to them breaking under the stresses but the 2mm and up will cope well with it most people work on wood around 4-2mm thick ( pleases corect me any one )and as for timber any timber can be pierced although open grained timbers such as ash , oak and elm can tend to be harder , good woods for piecing are lime , sycamore , holly , box and african black wood i have also found laburnum works well .
i hope this helps if not any one can alwasy contact me via email , our face book page or by phone im always happy to help and if im not around to answere your call please leave a msg ill get back to you as soon as i can
