they look good, will have to give them a try in the new year

My apologies for dragging up an old thread but I am thinking about what is needed to get into pieced work.
What are these cutters used with ? Are they for the Dremel ?
-
Not just Dremel, most multi-tool machines
-
I haven't tried piercing so this may sound like a daft question. Why don't the cutters come in 1mm, 2mm, 3,,? I can understand 1.5mm but why 2.4mm and 3.1mm?I presume there is a reason for this?

No Idea, could it be a spin off from 1/16" 3/32" & 1/8" perhaps ?
-
What are the alternatives to Dremel and where do Dremel fit into the quality scale ?
-
It all depends upon what you want.
Aldi/Lidl sometimes do a small system complete with flexi-drive for not a lot.
Axminster do a hanging Flexible Drive Unit http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-heavy-duty-flexible-drive-unit/ (http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-heavy-duty-flexible-drive-unit/) with a lot more power.
I would recommend using a flexi-drive as opposed to a hand-held mini-drill, it's more comfortable for longer periods and I personally thing you are less likely to bend the hand unit while the cutter is in the wood and 'break' the cutter.
-
Screwfix and Toolstation both offer Flexible Drives at under £15. The chuck may need a small chuck fitted to handle tiny shank tools; I use one with a 6mm hex shank that I bought some years ago for a few quid.
The other end can be mounted in one's drill press or any power drill.
The whole set up will cost much less than Axminster's Flexible drive!

For those of us (myself included) who have not tried piercing, it might be helpful to know a little more about it. For example, what sort of thickness do piercers normally turn down to? Are the woods that are particularly well suited to this, and woods that are not suited to it?

Thanks everyone. I really should have looked this up myself rather than getting you all to do it for me, its just that the dremel was the only thing I had come across and the 'and others' remark took me by surprise :)

They are some very good questions, I know we have some experts on here.

Joey Richardson is coming to the Nest in September 2014 for an all day demo. Crow Valley Woodturners in Cwmbran South Wales. She is a wizard at piercing so I am sure we can make room for a few valued guests if anyone fancies coming along.

One thing I did not say is it's the high speed that really helps with this method, 30,000+ rpm is a must. I've seen Jenny Starbuck demos, she uses a dentists air powered system that runs in the 150,000+rpm range, she makes it look effortless.

Now it is deceptive in the details, reads brass sparkplug brush, I'd the set from a past promotion an checking the larger one is brass, it's time check on purchase if it's still the case.

I've seen brushes offered elsewhere where the description suggests (to me) that brass looking brush(es) are NOT solid brass but brass plated.
It might be an idea to take a small magnet to check.

They wouldn't have had to run very fast.

A real brass brush can be bought in shoe repair shops or good shoe shops, they are sold as suede shoe cleaning brushes.

These piecing cutters will cut wood the full length of the cutter although i would not sugest doing this with the 1mm or 1.5mm as it will lead to them breaking under the stresses but the 2mm and up will cope well with it most people work on wood around 4-2mm thick ( pleases corect me any one )and as for timber any timber can be pierced although open grained timbers such as ash , oak and elm can tend to be harder , good woods for piecing are lime , sycamore , holly , box and african black wood i have also found laburnum works well .
i hope this helps if not any one can alwasy contact me via email , our face book page or by phone im always happy to help and if im not around to answere your call please leave a msg ill get back to you as soon as i can

I want to order a mixed set of these over the next day or two. Can you confirm that they will fit a dremel 4000 ? I have just brought one but not unpacked it yet :)
-
if it has a set of collets or is a small jacobs style chuck i 99% garantee they will fit they fit in my fordorm and my proxxon and have not heard of any machines they wont fit in
cant be 100%
-
If I remember correctly from these I bought, they have a 3mm (3.2mm) shank. A standard size that cetainly fits my Dremel.

I have a B&D Dremel clone.
I replaced the collet with a tiny dremel chuck and can now use all sorts of bits, cutters, et hoc genus omne in it.
With best wishes.
