Thanks everyone. I really should have looked this up myself rather than getting you all to do it for me, its just that the dremel was the only thing I had come across and the 'and others' remark took me by surprise :)

For those of us (myself included) who have not tried piercing, it might be helpful to know a little more about it. For example, what sort of thickness do piercers normally turn down to? Are the woods that are particularly well suited to this, and woods that are not suited to it?

Les

They are some very good questions, I know we have some experts on here.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Joey Richardson is coming to the Nest in September 2014 for an all day demo. Crow Valley Woodturners in Cwmbran South Wales. She is a wizard at piercing so I am sure we can make room for a few valued guests if anyone fancies coming along.

One thing I did not say is it's the high speed that really helps with this method, 30,000+ rpm is a must. I've seen Jenny Starbuck demos, she uses a dentists air powered system that runs in the 150,000+rpm range, she makes it look effortless.

Now it is deceptive in the details, reads brass sparkplug brush, I'd the set from a past promotion an checking the larger one is brass, it's time check on purchase if it's still the case.

I've  seen brushes offered elsewhere where the description suggests (to me) that brass looking brush(es) are NOT solid brass but brass plated.

It might be an idea to take a small magnet to check.

A real brass brush can be bought in shoe repair shops or good shoe shops, they are sold as suede shoe cleaning brushes.
