My apologies for dragging up an old thread but I am thinking about what is needed to get into pieced work.
What are these cutters used with ? Are they for the Dremel ?

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I haven't tried piercing so this may sound like a daft question. Why don't the cutters come in 1mm, 2mm, 3,,? I can understand 1.5mm but why 2.4mm and 3.1mm?I presume there is a reason for this?

No Idea, could it be a spin off from 1/16" 3/32" & 1/8" perhaps ?

What are the alternatives to Dremel and where do Dremel fit into the quality scale ?

It all depends upon what you want.
Aldi/Lidl sometimes do a small system complete with flexi-drive for not a lot.
Axminster do a hanging Flexible Drive Unit
http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-heavy-duty-flexible-drive-unit/
with a lot more power.
I would recommend using a flexi-drive as opposed to a hand-held mini-drill, it's more comfortable for longer periods and I personally thing you are less likely to bend the hand unit while the cutter is in the wood and 'break' the cutter.

Screwfix and Toolstation both offer Flexible Drives at under £15. The chuck may need a small chuck fitted to handle tiny shank tools; I use one with a 6mm hex shank that I bought some years ago for a few quid.
The other end can be mounted in one's drill press or any power drill.
The whole set up will cost much less than Axminster's Flexible drive!

For those of us (myself included) who have not tried piercing, it might be helpful to know a little more about it. For example, what sort of thickness do piercers normally turn down to? Are the woods that are particularly well suited to this, and woods that are not suited to it?
