Tuag Undod - Towards Unity
« on: February 23, 2017, 04:01:52 PM »
This is a sculpture that I've been working on for a few days, but which has been buzzing around inside my head for months, and it is going to be submitted to a selection panels for the National Open Art Exhibition at this year's national Eisteddfod of Wales, on Anglesey.

The title, "Tuag Undod", means Towards Unity' and the symbolism of the various parts goes like this.....
  • the blocks on the base represent society, be it local, national or internarional, and especially refers to the way in which certain factions of society can be marginalised through disability, prowess or even through religious ideology
  • the three cones represent individuals in society who have broken free of the crowd and are striving to rise above it
  • the three sections of the ring represent the unity that the three individuals strive to create. One cone, the tallest of the three, has made it to full height and tipped its arc into place. The other two cones are still growing and their arcs are yet to fall into place.

The overall height is 19" (48cm) and the baseboard is 18" square (45cm). Materials used were spalted beech for the cones, sycamore for the ring of unity and anything that I could get my hands on for the rest.

C&C always welcome...Les
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Les,

as a turning or even a wood art sculpture I cannot fault it.

But as a total pleb when it comes to interpreting art, I'd never see in it, how you describe it.

Best of luck in the Eisteddfod of Wales.
