Robinia burr hollow form/workshop pics
« on: February 14, 2017, 04:58:05 PM »
Taken a break from texturing today to turn this Robinia Burr hollow form. The burr was given to me by a mate who generally only turned Oak so he gave me all of his Robinia burrs, a trailer full. Have to say I do enjoy turning it and the figuring is amazing. Hollowed with the Crown Midi Revolution and finished in lemon oil at the moment for sanding. Once dry will seal with Cellulose sanding sealer, buffed and then noncrystalline wax and buffed again.

The lemon oil allows me to sand thin work so to reduce heat and chances of cracking. Lemon oil will totally evaporate and can be over covered with finishes that would not normally be compatible with oil

Turners don't make mistakes, they have design opportunities

I love it !!!
It would also be of interest, to me, to see a pic of the burr you started with.

Regards, Mike

Thanks Pete. I was very fortunate to have a very kind mate that gave me all of his Robinia burr stock as he only likes to turn Oak. I have around 20 burrs in total of a nice size.

Thanks Mike. I am afraid I did not take a picture of the burr once cut up on the band saw. I do however have the bits left over that I could assemble for a pic if that helps. I always cut up my burrs not to save as much burr as possible but to get the best for the form I am turning. Often I can throw away half of the burr to get the quality section I am after.

That's why,to me,a novice,it is nice,when possible,to see what 'The master' :-) starts with. Perhaps on another one ?

That is kind of you to send me that kudos Mike, but I am no master, I have just wrecked a few more hollow forms than some and manage now to get a few more right.  :)

I do have in my workshop some burrs I cut up a while ago and some solid ones so I can certainly take some pictures for you to show how I have gone about processing the blanks the way I like to use them.

Stunning piece Mark, the wood speaks for itself, you've done the magic with the form.
Thanks for the tip on the lemon oil, not something I would have considered possible but I'll give it a try.
Cheers Rick

Thank you very much. Sanding with Lemon oil is a joy. Due to it being so thin it builds up a sludge that also grain fills so you get a beautiful feel to the wood. Just keep a small wire brush handy to rub out the abrasive. The great thing about lemon oil is that it does not have hardeners in it so if you forget to clean out the abrasive until the next day you still can, where as if you used say danish oil the abrasive once oil dry is pretty much unusable.
