Vortex
« on: July 13, 2016, 06:20:35 PM »
This is a sculptural piece that I've been wanting to work on for some time, but the recent viewing of 'tied stone' sculptural work by an oriental sculptor, whose name evades me, spurred me on to get this finished.
Brown oak, leather, Granite and a little piece of ash. The disk is 12" diameter, and it's called 'Vprtex'

C&C always welcome....Les

Now why does this ring bells LOL. beat me to it. Only thing I would look at agin is the supporting (ash?) pillar. Personally I would rather it were much thinner, probably need to be a brass or steel rod. Aside from that my only criticism is that you got there first with the shizu okino

Pete....the supporting pillar is an offcut of the brown oak. I had intended to use brass, which I have in stock, but I don't have thread-taps so I couldn't drill and tap the end of the rod to make a satisfactory, strong connection with the granite. I might yet turn a little hemisphere of blackwood, perhaps about 40mm diameter, screw it to the granite and glue the end of the brass rod into a hole drilled into the blackwood. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

       A very interesting and intriguing piece that has a very Celtic look to it...... to be honest Les would not really
       know  what to suggest for the stand as most things might clash

I agree with Mike, I think it would look better as a wall hanging, especially as it is 12" diameter.

Les, 2 questions;

1. Have you got a piece in the Daniel Collection yet, and

2. Why not.

Your work is certainly good enough for collectors.

Mike/Bryan....I take your point about hanging the 'Vortex' instead of mounting it like this. I'm on a training course tomorrow, but when I get back I'll try photographing it free of its mounting, lying on a white sheet. Happy to give this a go and let's see what it looks like.

As for your question, Bryan....hey; I dabble it this artistic stuff and every now and again I get one right....for now, I'll be happy with that. i have a couple of collectors from Shropshire who visit me regularly and buy pieces and I'm delighted to have their custom....but that doesn't stop me dreaming!

Hi Les

This is different I'm with the others a wall hanging I think would suit the piece.

With that said I like it very much.
