Hollow Form in Beech
« on: May 22, 2016, 09:41:37 PM »
Hi all, just another small Hollow Form in Beech (with a Walnut lid/finial), yes I know it's another coloured piece which is not to everyone's taste, but I kind of like doing them at the minute. Size is 7.5" x 3.5" and is done with Jo Sonja iridescent paints.

C & C's are welcome as always.

Best Regards

Gary

Lovely colouring Gary but I think you need to lose the Finial it spoils the piece

Hi Gary

I agree with George, great colouring.  Either lose the finial or do something with it - maybe slim it down and increase the length of the top teardrop?
Cheers Dave

If you insist on having a finial it would look better in black

cheers George and Dave, I was going to do another finial in African Blackwood. I'll have a look at it tomorrow and see what would be best, none or slimmed down black one

Question ! are there any factors which you would consider when to add a finial and when not to? or is this down to personal taste ? colour, shape, size etc
cheers
Gary

I've spent ages looking at this. I've never made a piece like this, so my opinion may not count, but here it is.....the hollow form is beautiful, from any angle. The subtle colour changes (just a little) from each view, but the finial remains the same, so it takes my attention away from  the hollow form....which detracts from the beauty of the piece as a whole.

Les
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Hi Les your comments always count, as do all the comments on here. Yes I agree, this lid does not suit the piece. I will either remove the lid/finial or replace it with a black one which might lend itself to the overall look better. Will have a look tonight after work.

We both admire the colouring job you have achieved on the hollow form Gary...... we were going to suggest ,
that perhaps a fine collar might have worked.
      Kind Regards
