Wee coloured Alder H/F
« on: May 13, 2016, 11:08:21 PM »
Been rather busy lately so this is the first posting in a wee while. A small piece of Alder (about4.5 - 5 inch without finial) that I found lying about the workshop. African Blackwood finial and chestnut spirit stains.
C & C's always welcome.

Cheers George. How's the base on this one? does it looked "tucked in " enough with regards to my last couple of posts?

HI Gary,

That's a superb effect with the spirit dye on the Alder. Can you share with us how you built up the colours and what method you used to apply the dye?

The flow from the shoulder into neck of the form looks a little unconventional to me and I'm still trying to make up my mind whether or not it works to my eye.

Great piece though.
Thanks for posting.
Cheers
Rick

Many thanks Rick and Ed, glad you like it. Rick the stains are just "blobbed" on with kitchen roll, one colour at a time building up to the coloured finish that I like.

Hello Gary

Love the colours and the shape below the shoulder.  But I'm with Rick, I would have preferred the shoulder to come round and carry on into the finial lid.  Alternatively perhaps the base of the finial should be cove shaped to match the shoulder?  I'd also have made the finial a bit thinner.

But much of that is personal taste.

Cheers Dave

Cheers for the comments Dave, I agree about the finial and will be re-making that. As for the shoulder, I have done previous ones the way you have mentioned and yes, they do look more flowing when a finial lid is fitted, so maybe my next one might be done this way.
Many thanks again for the comments and input.

Best Regards

Gary

I do love the shape and the colours of the hollow form. I'd say the choice of wood for the lid/finial is great, but I have to say I am rather disappointed by the shape of the finial. In my opinion, it lacks finesse. There's not enough flow from the tip of the finial into the shape/shoulder of the HF.
