maple platter
« on: May 09, 2016, 11:26:41 PM »
this platter is 17 1/2x1 1/2" in size. I was really lucky if I had took another cut I think I would of gone through the bottom. you can see the light from the chucking point. all comments welcome.

A good clean shape to emphasise the grain...it's often good to let the wood do the talking!

One nice looking platter made from a very nice piece of wood Dennis

Think I might have been tempted to colour it  :)

All the best

thank you all for your comments. I think this is the biggest platter I have attempted. it was chattering around quite a bit so in the end I decided to sand it to shape starting with 80 grit.

That is a big platter, the chatter under your tools must have been amazing, no wonder you finished it with abrasive.

From the width I'd guess you got the from the side of the pith and the grain I can see says the same, quarter sawn. So the ripple figure really looks good.
