Walnut Bowl with Inlay
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:52:52 PM »
Ok everybody, honeymoon period over, tell me what you really think.

This is Walnut, with an Ash inlay and is about 80mm high finished with Microcrystalline.
I personally think that the rim of the bowl is too chunky and I should have taken a bit more off the rim to be more inline with the bottom part of the bowl.
C&C most welcome.

Regards.

the bowl is fine and i like the under cut inlay as it's not something you usually see.

the wood looks alot like iroko.

I like the contrast of the two timbers, and you're right about the rim, it's way too heavy. There appears to be a grain mis-match in the iroko, which suggests that you cut the original rim away, slid an ash ring onto the bowl and then replaced the rim....is that how you did it? If you did, it would have added to the piece if you could have matched the grain on the rim to the grain on the bowl.

Hi Les.

There are two separate pieces of Iroko, the inner bowl and the outer one. So the grain would not match.
I can't see how I could make this and match the grain, but I'm open to suggestions.

Cheers.

Not very clear what you are saying  the inner bowl and outer one sounds like one inside the other. The obviouswaywould have been to have taken a slice of your blank glued a slice of different wood on then the original slice back on top.
I don't like the way the different wood is in a recces I think it would have looked better out to the side of the bowl.

Yes George, there is one bowl within another so you don't see the Ash inlay inside the bowl.

Only problem I have with this is the rim as others have said. Like the idea of the bowl within the bowl. Could you not put it back in a jam chuck, fill the inside with tissue paper, bring up the tailstock and refine the rim? Seems a pity to leave it as is when even you aren't happy with the rim?

If you were to turn the blank down nearly to size then turn a stepped recess before parting the top off with a thin parting tool. Then turn a ring off different wood and glue it onto the recess. Then glue the top back on lining up the grain you then finish your bowl inside and out and if the join inside shows make a feature of it.
A lot less work with a good result I would think.

Yes George, I can see that working and a better way of doing it.

Many thanks.

I have never used a jam chuck Pete, but I'll give it a go.
What could possibly go wrong... :o

The thoughts on this bowl previously, was that the rim was too heavy. So on Pete's suggestion, I have remounted the piece on recut the rim.
Is this better?

Hi George.

I held the base of the bowl in a button chuck, which was not secure enough. So I use the tail stock to hold it against the faceplate.
