New Bandsaw
« on: October 22, 2022, 01:34:10 AM »
My old old "starter" bandsaw has eventually given up the ghost,so I have decided to have a new one.
I would like at least an 8in depth of cut, & am looking to spend up to £1.5k
I have looked at the Laguna 14/12 from Simon Hope, but am not sure about it. If anyone has any experience of this machine I would be pleased to hear your views.
Which bandsaws are you all using, that you would recommend or not.
I am looking forward to your replies to help me make the right purchase

Keep a look out for a second hand Startrite, they seem to be far better made than most modern Bandsaws.

Thank you all for your replies.
Having soldiered on for a number of years with an old second hand machine & seem to have spent more time doing repairs & making adjustments than using it, I have set my heart on a new (or as new) machine  I have been saving the pennies for couple of years, & am now ready to splash out. I have a 16 amp single phase supply.
What machine are you using that you are absolutely delighted with?

I love my record power bs500, but they don't make them anymore. their BS450 and 350 Sabre range are good know lots of people who use them.

Maybe a new Startrite? It may not be as well made as the old ones though.

Hi Jonas, I have an old Startrite 352 single phase 3/4hp 13A Plug. It has never let me down and does everything I want it to do. It's not as big as the Axminster Trade Bandsaws but I have the club bandsaw for that. It uses a 112" blade and is floor mounted, you need to make a dust shroud for the dust collector as it just deposits the dust on the floor at the back of the saw.

what make is your old one? and what repairs were you needing to make?

i can only speak from my own experience but new machines are just not made like they used to be.

i was even skepticle when i bought my SIP 01444 in about 2004-5 but it's never needed a single repair (except new blades) and it's been fairly well abused. i've heard of build quality going down hill there after as manufacture was moved to Asia.

depending on what sort of work you may want to do i suggest that you get the biggest saw you can for the money.

mine had specs like this.

Supply:   230v (13A)
Motor Power:   1.5kW (2hp)
Table Tilting:   0° - 45°
Table Size:   535mm x 435mm
Table Height:   1010mm
Cutting Height:   235mm
Throat Width:   355mm
Blade Length:   2750mm
Blade Width:   6mm - 25mm
Blade Speeds:   480mtr/min 840mtr/min
Net Weight:   90.00kg
