Wood ID
« on: April 25, 2020, 10:08:39 AM »
You would think by now that I would know my woods. Can anyone identify this wood? I have already ruled out some woods that have this type of fleck in it but it could even be a subspecies of one I know.

it appears to be one of the maples (Acer spp), what species have you ruled out???

a better endgrain photo would help me.
sand to 400g and take a clear close up so i can see the pore structure please.

I had some Plane and the bark was different and the grain more pronounced in that as in this bowl

how big is that square end i'm looking at?

the grain in platanus can vary a fair bit but it is possible it's something else.

do you have more pictures of the bark???

my brain is not really working today.

i had thought it was beech when i first looked at it then thought it was an Acer then thought it was Platanus.

looking again at the bark i'm back to beech but you ruled that one out too, how come???

I looked at the bark on beech but as you know barks can change with age and growth as well as there seemed to much what I call fleck in the piece to any beech that I have seen. The sample I showed is about 2 1/2" square. I will try and turn a piece tomorrow the original log was a good 10' long and 12 to 14" diameter and quite straight through the whole length

i'm now standing in the naughty corner...

That is what I was told it was when it was given to me but could not remember what the bark looked like but the holly I had in the past did not show the grain as this did that is why I asked. I agree holly is quite a dense wood as I found it great for finials being quite white in colour and takes detail pretty well.
Tomorrow will take a picture of some holly I have next to this wood

you realise i've now lost all credibility trying to answer what this timber is....

now you've turned it i'm sticking to Beech.

That was not my intention now you can see why I was thrown with this piece and I have had plenty of beech in the past granted without the bark so had to look that up when I was doing my checks

I turn a lot of Beech, and have seen many of it's variations, and I have to agree with Steve, that is Beech.
TT, AKA Pete, but that name is taken :-)
