it appears to be one of the maples (Acer spp), what species have you ruled out???a better endgrain photo would help me.sand to 400g and take a clear close up so i can see the pore structure please.
how had you ruled out Plane tree???Platanus x acerifolia it is...
my brain is not really working today.i had thought it was beech when i first looked at it then thought it was an Acer then thought it was Platanus.looking again at the bark i'm back to beech but you ruled that one out too, how come???
STEVE EARIS YOU COMPLETE DUNCE...i'm now standing in the naughty corner...pretty sure it is Ilex aquifolium, Holly. should be a fairly dense hard timber dull cream going grey as time passes.
you realise i've now lost all credibility trying to answer what this timber is....now you've turned it i'm sticking to Beech.
I turn a lot of Beech, and have seen many of it's variations, and I have to agree with Steve, that is Beech.
