Yew Box with Verdigris Lid
« on: April 23, 2020, 03:33:18 PM »
This was a bit of Yew with lots of inclusions of bark and cracks, so I turned it to a reasonable shape but leaving lots of character, then hollowed it a little.

The lid is (I don’t remember) but I coated it in copper paint then dripped some of the acid onto it to cause the verdigris effect (the jury is still out on if I like it or not). It was then given a couple of coats of Chestnut satin varnish, to prevent the chemicals getting onto people's fingers, and a beech finial was added.

I struggle a bit with this one, Bryan.....the copper/verdigris lid works wonderfully and the chunky finial is so right for the box, but (for me) the three don't work well together.

Les, I can see where you are coming from.

The lid effect is an experiment as I'd just bought the paint and acid. And I do like the effect but as you note, is it right as a lid to this box.

Thankfully, remaking another lid will not be a fantastic problem if I decide I really don't like it. But I think any lid will have a problem sitting on the base as it is so irregular.
