what axminster jaws should I get
« on: December 23, 2014, 01:16:20 PM »
gents and ladies, and everyone in between.

my new chuck has arrived (Axminster K100 ). now i need to buy some jaws.
would "C" or "d" be better for me?    I do pens and starting to look into bowls, I think The "c" jaws would be more versatile but will they hold a pen blank for drilling etc ???
or do you know of a better set/solution

don't make any pens but the c jaws are very good and have used mine for 4 years for everything.

you can make your own chuck for drilling blanks.

The 'D' jaws would be one option but these 'BF" jaws might be a little better and more versatile

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

You will probably find the D jaws aren't really suitable for larger bowls and the C jaws might struggle to hold a pen blank effectively but if it is out of these two, I think the C jaws would be best as they are more versatile than the D jaws.

Best jaws for the Axminster chucks are the O'Donnell set I use them most of the time for miniature work to large bowls and platters.  http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-o-donnell-jaw-sets

But their clearance sale starts tomorrow so worth having a look then, I will be :-D

I have often thought of getting the Odonnell jaws. Very expensive but they are, I guess, 3 sets in one. Having used the Gripper jaws though I think I prefer them to the dovetail versions.

I think the O`Donnell jaws set would be your best, you`ll have 3 different sized jaws then, negating the need for C jaws, which are designed for holding the bases of goblets, and with the O`Donnell jaws they`ll be good for holding pen blanks to as well as many other types of work, cheers,

Eric.
