Latest pieces
« on: November 15, 2012, 10:44:49 AM »
Hello Some bowls for a commission, mixed timber Yew, Horse chestnut and Ash.
The Yew was Felled about 12 years and had many nails in it ( Thanks Dad).
Ruined a chainsaw blade and damaged a couple of gouges.

John, that's some stunning pieces, lovely colour to the yew, had to be the nails ...  ??? .. need to invest in a metal detector, once you replace the chain.

John,

I agree with David, stunning - You've got to love yew and moreso when it has the purple in it.

I take it the spalted bowls are the Horse Chestnut - it does spalt well.

Shame about the chainsaw blade not a cheap blank after-all then! (I did a bandsaw blade the same way a couple of weeks back).

Hello John,
I agree with the comments made, a stunning piece of wood. I do like the detail that you have put on the foot of the Yew bowl. Very nice.
Regards

Hi,
I put the colour down the tree growing on the side of an old "cess" pit! Not used for about sixty years. I remember it as a child when the trunk was 4in in diameter.

Had commented on soil type when we saw Woody's Yew pieces with the white sap wood, may well be the case as John gives it location, the tale may not be a load of old cxxp.

Copper nails are generally said to kill a tree.. never tried and would not wish too.

Cheers
