Cherry tree available

Hello all,

a cherry tree is available, and if I read it right yo'd have to fell it yourself...also...I think he means 6ft circumference, NOT diameter!

If anybody is interested please email me at cobwebcrafts@btinternet.com and I'll pass on email and telephone details.

The tree is quite substantial – the main trunk is over 6ft in diameter, before it splits in 2 (at a height of about 4ft.  the two main boughs are then each over 12 ins in diameter. See photos.

I live in Knaresborough – HG5 ***.

Tel 01423 *******

I just need to get rid of the tree, so if any of your members wanted it and were competent to remove it, then I would not charge.  If I have to pay a tree specialist, then I would need to recoup costs.

Regards

Ken

I know some members will think I am being a 'grumpy old man' but I thought I should go ahead, as this post set some alarm bells ringing. I hope the forum isn't too hard on me :-\

We all like to get hold of wood but this post sounds like someone trying to get a tree felled for free. Ok, so he's 'giving away' the timber, but is that a fair offset for having the tree felled, and disposed of? My local tree surgeons charge around £200 for a medium sized tree. Will the resulting wood be worth that?

I can see it being very tempting for an amateur to have a go at felling it, but be very careful, and remember a tree surgeon has to have insurance in case anything goes wrong. Trees are heavy, even small ones, and don't always behave as you expect. How do you stand if you damage something?

And another thought, from the description, there isn't much trunk, so the bulk of the timber will be stressed and may be problematic to turn. Will your costs and liabilities be worth it?

I would suggest the owner has the tree professionally felled and then tries to dispose of the wood. That is safer all round.

I'll go back to my workshop now. ;D

no people and tree surgeons seam to think trees are worth a fortune and there not its what you put in to it that makes it worth the money
i mill our own timber for the shop that entails me collecting the timber with the help of some one else and there traylor so thats the first cost
then i have to pay for the timber
then there is the milling and stacking and stickers for drying
there is also the space that that timber takes up for 3-5 years while drying
or the cost of putting it in the kiln
i then have to prosses the timber removing any defects after prossesing in to blanks it then has to be sealed
there is alot of work envolved in properly working trees in to timber

Hi Turners Cabin,
I was pleased to see that I can breathe a sigh of relief after posting my earlier comment, as someone agrees with me, and that the value of the tree comes from a lot of work done after it's been felled, not from the tree itself. So the cost of felling a tree is not offset by the value of the tree as it stands.

My local tree surgeon charges only that much to cover his costs - equipment, labour, insurance etc. and for 'disposal' of the tree. Quite reasonable, I think you'll agree. Fortunately he then gives me a call if he's got anything interesting and then, if I choose to, I go through the same process as yourself.

Hopefully the owner of this tree will offer it to the local woodturners after it's been felled and they might turn a bowl or something as a 'thank you' for the wood.

Ian has about sumed it up as to personal costs, sounds as if the guy wants it totally cleaned, if the rubbish, and I've found it's as much as the tree, can't be burnt on site, then your in for a long haul in getting rid of it, lots of bags, it part of the reason the surgeon shred it and that's a truck load in it's self.

An yes a person needs insurance etc. should you go felling timber for anyone else, your fine-ish on your own use and property, but pull down a power line or bring down a wall/fence, see who comes after you.

As with Paul ("Master Bowl Turner") I'm finished ...   :D ...

Now where's this guy..     ;D ...
