So what have I been doing with my new lathe 05

Tall Goblet - English Yew over American Black Walnut.

The Goblet is 1/8" thick and 3 1/4" diameter (3mm x 80mm), the whole thing is 11 1/2" (290mm) Tall, It has a tiny captive ring and a minimum stem diameter of 4mm.

And yes, I turned the stem with my skews.

Thank you John.

One of the reasons I bought this lathe was the high speed it can attain so I can work on thin spindles - the skew is a bit of a cause with me (as Martin Lawrence can attest).

I found the trick was to slide the blank into the headstock with about 3" sticking out. Use the C Jaws of my chuck to hold it there. Turn the first bit (just under the cup) then slowly extend the length to turn it. I used electrical tape to form a hard joint between the turning and live-centre. Then back-wound the tail stock to apply a 'pull' to the timber to reduce whip as it got thinner and more-so as I advanced to the full length.

That's brilliant. I used to make a lot of lace bobbins, and I know how hard it is to turn long thin spindles like your stem. Very nicely turned to an excellent finish. I like the small captive ring too. Well done.

Tall stems, very elegant goblets.
