Cut a dead Holly down a few months ago and planked with my 'Alaskan Mill' I was suprised to see it was 'spalted', here is a piece I turned from it.

If shown that bowl and not told what it was, Holly would have been very low down my list of guesses.

We love fungus and what a fantastic effect it's created.

How big is the bowl please?

What unusual markings this timber has. I am trying to work out whether it is endgrain or side grain. As you used an Alaskan mill I would assume it is sidegrain. What an amazing tool this is as well. The finish on the piece seems to be good but I am not sure about the shape. Bit deep for a bowl? Good work though.

Well to answer a few queries the bowl is about 5" dia and 5" deep (if its classed as a bowl) the log was cut through the middle so its not end grain.I hope I have answered them for you - I have lots more of this tree I'll keep you posted as I turn new pieces.
