A wee African blackwood vase
« on: June 20, 2012, 02:57:44 PM »
I received an African blackwood log today 8" x 4" so I just couldn't resist I had to turn it so on the trusty band saw cut it in half and this is the end result turned with my new small tool that I made and finished with sanding sealer and spay lacquer it is 4" x 4" the hardest part was washing the black contamination out of the sapwood with white spirit

After 20 years turning I still get a kick from it be it a large or small turning

When sanding the black dust gets in the grain of the cream sapwood which is softer it can be left to make the gain stand out more but I prefer to wash it out with white spirit also if you don't get rid of it it can make the sapwood look very dirty

Woody, unusual to see the paler cambium layer on blackwood. It does take a stunning finish as well.

Nicely turned vase, well done.

It’s really nice to see what happens to our timber when it leaves us you have done a great job .
the reason for the price difference is the weight i sell the back wood by the kg
the pieces on eBay are smaller ones as the ones on my site are larger
I’m always happy to cut it smaller if it helps any one
