Anybody there?
« on: April 03, 2020, 07:45:39 PM »
This and other forums seem to have died the death, surely in these difficult times, we need to keep in contact with each other. Can we post some goodwill messages, for some it maybe the only contact with the rest of the world

Hi Ron

It is strangely quiet I guess everyone is out tidying up their workshops or cutting off-cuts into shavings. I have been working on improving my finishing and seeing how deep a pile of shavings I can still work in before needing to sweep up (mid calf).

I am also playing a lot more with design, there is not much of a market for finished pieces at the moment though I have posted a couple of commissions out this week, I don't want to make much my competition entry for the club monthly competition for March is sitting sadly on the dining table at the moment wondering if the club will happen again in this uncertain world, and if it does will Chris post the same criteria or is it to be a forgotten piece destined for the back of a cupboard forgotten and unloved!

I do hope all my fellow turners are keeping safe and sane out there, have enough timber in stock to stay busy, hey if not did you really need 4 legs on that dining table? or perhaps it could be 100mm shorter....

Hope these forums do pick up, it is hard to make anything out of tumble weed....

TT, AKA Pete, but that name is taken :-)

I have not produced much as been busy preparing the garden and greenhouse for the veg which is something I do every year. I am trying to cut out some musical notes for a bowl project but came to a grinding halt when I managed to break three blades in a single day and now waiting for an order to come in. And then there is the voice telling me that the mower needs repairing as SWMBO wants to cut the front lawn, so that was done very quickly. While she does that I will sit in the greenhouse and talk to the seedlings out of her way.
Tomorrow will sit and watch Ed Oliver demonstrate

Yes , still social distancing but sadly little turning,  firstly the list of jobs that were on the list to do " when I get time " I have been informed by the enforcer you now have time, so very very difficult to refuse , as I do like her cooking .

When I get back into the turning it will be practising threading as one of the jobs was tidying up the wood store and found about 15 nice pieces of boxwood that had been hiding under a pile of strawberry wood that I was given, that was wet and forgotten about and unfortunately split badly,  some of the boxwood I had dated in 2015  and some 5ins in diameter.

Sadly the exhibition I was involved with in May and a 2 day demonstration have rightly been cancelled and it looks like very little craft shows will be taking place in the summer,  so sitting on a fair bit of stock probably like most craft turners ..

Not true Steve your knowledge is an invaluable part of the forum, e.g. what is this piece? I only know it was an old blank that has been on top of the high rack and it has been there since before I replaced my ladder with a shorter one which is about 10 years... needed it today so balanced the ladder against something flimsy and climbed to the top! the label was a piece of white paper with any trace of ink long since disappeared!

Hi Twisted Trees, an idea for your club competitions. Our club is getting members to post pictures of their entries, which are then sent to all the club members for voting. I know it's not the same as seeing a piece for real, but it maintains a bit of social contact, as well as giving us some projects to do.

Now I am wondering if that coulc be expanded to encompass everyone on here? Could we get a category setup "Covid competition" and get someone to set a project for the month? Members then post two pictures during the month and at the end we all vote on them. That's the tricky bit; how to count the votes. Anyone got any suggestions.?

Keep making shavings, and just think, keeping yourself in your workshop is probably the best form of self-isolation out there.

Hi Steve, I disagree with you completely. I find your knowledge of timber mind blowing, and whenever someone asks "what wood" I eagerly await your response. I enjoy learning a bit more about the material many of us take for granted.

Totally agree I also eagerly await Steve's reply then instantly google the latin name he gives us to see where it grows, what it looks like before it is cut down. Though I can see that his specialised knowledge may be more welcome here than at the local football club.

Pete, i could do with a few more photos as the are so many that are white/cream with obvious growth rings.
horse chestnut, lime, sycamore and lots of other Acers can show these characteristics.

looks like an Acer to me though.

Well I started something here, more posts in a day than in the last month! Keep it up.
I have been bsy in the garden, replaceing wooden edging as the other lot went rotten.

On the turning front I turned some light pulls, Photo later.

I got a request from our local Hospice to make some 'holding hearts' these are given to the recently bereaved as somethingto hold, they have wooden crosses, but these are not suitable for everyone. Just 45*45*15mm they are meant to fit in the hand and give some comfort. I asked how many and the answer was "oh, an hundred will do" I passed this on to all club members and got some encouraging results, so it will happen. Not wood turning but wood anyway.

Steve you can see we can talk about other things besides wood!

I have also started a Face book page for club members, go to Facebook ans search for
Bury St Edmunds Woodturning Club/pages.

I am keeping the newletter going and I am nagging committee members to give me something to put in it, a photo with a write up will do.

So lets keep this going, it looks like a long haulm back to normality
