Another oddity - not entirely successful but of interest I hope!

That is a nice bit of 'out of the BOWL' thinking  :)

Hello Will,
An interesting idea. How about filling the star with left over pewter ?! I have experimented specifically with two and four part split turnings to make hollow shapes and sculptural pieces so I appreciate the effort you have made !

I am very impressed with the way you are taking your turning. Not straightforward turnings but you appear to be looking for new ways to experiment with, and developing new techniques.

Willstewart there is a way to achieve the effect you are after, using the lost wood process. Glue together segments of your chosen decorative timber but inbetween them, using a paper joint, glue less attractive or "disposable" timber. Turn it as a bowl as normal and then when finisged break the paper joints removing the timber you don't want and then glue the nice bits together again.

BHT - a good idea I think.  Meanwhile I have found a very simple way of 'strapping' the exterior - using a hoop from an embroidery kit.  These are double wooden (?cane) hoops for holding a fabric tight like a drum but are rigid and would be good for this (& quite cheap). As sold only the outer hoop adjusts, and just to clamp the cloth, but this might be changed.

& I am explring an 'orthogonal' method of getting scalloped edges - I will report if it works!
