Hardwood Crates
« on: December 08, 2018, 06:59:04 PM »
I was given two very rough sawn crates as firewood. These crates are quite common and are used for transporting stone slabs from India. On starting to saw them up I got curious about the wood and planed a few bits to discover the wood was mostly fine grained hardwood of various colours and types.
Much of this wood has now been turned into laminated bowls. So, look out for neighbours having stone slabs put down and offer to do them a favour by disposing of the crates for them.

Pallets from more tropical climes are often a good source of unusual woods. I once got hold of one from Australia made of Black Heart Sassafrass.

A god 1/2 of my wood source is recycled, reclaimed wood. Always worth scratching the surfacde to see what's underneath. Do beware of preservatives on industrial sources mind.
