Weathered oak burr bowl
« on: May 22, 2018, 10:39:25 AM »
Another lump of local oak burr which was recovered from an old trunk that had lain in a field for years, slowly weathering away. Just a little amount of soft tissue on it, as evidenced by the white streaks following some of the cracks, so they were doused with ca adhesive before the final cut. It's had a couple of coats of BLO and won't take any more as it just stands in shiny patches on the hardest parts of the timber. It's 10" diameter by 4" deep (25cm, x 10cm)
C&C always welcome...Les

You can't go wrong with a bit of oak burr, well saved and well turned Les. I especially like the three lines in the top of the bowl, very pleasing on the eye. Les

Thank you Les....I'm pleased that you like the three scorch-lines. There's a trend towards avoiding any form of decoration when the grain is as complex as this, but the line of the rim was lost amongst the grain, so I decided to highlight it. One scorch-line looked too insignificant, whereas two called out for a third, so three it was!

An absolute ripper. Like the scorch lines also, think you got that just right. The contrast of the white patches really adds to it. I like turning old timber like this, you can never be quite sure what you are going to find when you start.

The burr speaks for itself, you needed to keep the form simple so as not to overpower it.

It's a stunning looking bowl.

Don't want to share the location of this field do you?

I would be more than happy to tell you where the field is, Bryan, especially as the oak is no longer there.  :D ;D ::)
