Demo Bowls
« on: February 04, 2018, 12:42:52 PM »
On Wednesday evening I did a demonstration in our local Woodturning Club I was going to make a Cake stand but in the end I decided I liked colouring more that Cake stands.
I used a couple of Bowl blanks that I had roughed out about a year ago the red one is Sycamore and the darker one is Beech.
Some Months ago I had a day with Martin Saban-Smith who makes and sells his Intrinsent colours they are water based stains.
What I like about these is that the grain and figuring of the wood shows through the finished wood.
These Bowls were not completed  on Wednesday because I considered it more important to show the colouring technique than creating finished Bowls so I finished them of this morning..

By using a combination of colours I have highlighted the grain and figure in the wood.

I like them both, George, although prefer the striking colour on the sycamore to the more earthy colours on the beech. It has to be said that the colour certainly emphasises the grain pattern.

p.s. ... a wise decision re the cake stand  ;D
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

The Cake stand is in the Bin Les my heart was not really in it.
I dont think the picture of the Beech one is good enough I could have done with a bit more light it looks better in real life.
The funny thing is everybody that has seen them in the flesh prefere the Beech

I like the red one of the two  as it certainly brings out the grain, but the second just looks muddy in my eyes and not very pleasing

Very nice work George I also like the red one more than the brown one, but that's only because the red one looks warm and I'm fed up with seeing autumn colours  ;D . Les
