Nice little commission
« on: December 02, 2017, 10:28:48 AM »
Often people see things at shows and ask me to make something more specific. This was one of them. The customer wanted a goblet that would be used for beer so chunky and more masculine. Needed to hold at least 1/2 a litre. This is walnut and 180mm tall and is 95mm diameter. Left on the chucking point . (which will become a few brooches....waste not want not) and was sent to the customer for approval. Happy so just a case of finishing the bottom and coating for use.

Hi Pete,
That's a nice piece of work. I hope you don't mind me asking but what coating do you use to make it useable as a beer goblet? I have never had any success with plasticote as it eventually cracks with the movement of the wood, and other finishes don't seem up to immersion in liquids. Or is it a trade secret? :-X

No trade secret. I use rustins plasticote two part lacquer and put about 6 coats on leaving it to dry between coats. It is pretty heat resistant, water proof andd alchohol resistant and is used on kitchen worktops.  Been using it for some years and no failures yet. I tend to use only harder woods that perhaps don't move as much. Softer woods can move as you say with differences in peoples homes. I also stress that they are for juse ony with cool drinks and not to wash with hot water either.

Thanks Pete,
It looks like I wasn't putting on enough coats.

Make sure they dry between coats as well. I made the mistake once of rushing it and just waiting for it to be touch dry and found that the new coat would soften the previous one and I'd get runs.

½ Litre, not for wine then - Good to see someone wanting to drink beer out of a wooden goblet.

I like the design elegant with just enough design to stamp your mark on it.

Nothing wrong with a 1/2 litre wine goblet.
