« on: April 23, 2017, 11:06:57 PM »
Coloured Ash Burr with a twist exposed wood panels

390mm x 210mm this piece is quite thick 20mm - 10mm on the flat panels.

Finished with Acrylic lacquer and buffed (now needs a soft bush to clean out the compound)

C&C's welcome as always

Ed

Ed,

To quote Monty Python, 'and now for something completely different'.

And how!

Did you cut the sides then turn it, or cut and polish them as post work.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Although it is looked on as a bit naughty to colour a burr, ( as you know we often do it ourselves ) This piece is certainly
different.... which we always like to see.
  Kind Regards Tony di

Thanks for the comments as always.

Bryan the pot was turned and then the faces planed off then hollowed and coloured.

I think that it looks much better in real life then I can get from photo's perhaps I need to take up photography  :)

All the best

I really like the idea behind this but would prefer it if the sides were all the same size? Not easy to do I know.

Hi All  thanks again for your views

Pete the two smaller side panels are the same size the face panel is much larger the side panels were left smaller so that the colours of the burr showed.

George it's art and not everyone is going to like it.

Oh, yes, please let's have this debate! What else is a forum good for?
Now, in this particular case, and not wanting to put a dent into Ed (who is a lovely guy and deserves all the credits he can get), as far as I am concerned, this is not art. Sorry, Ed.
For me, art has to do a couple of things, not necessarily all of them at once:
  • It has to challenge your brain or present a new approach
  • It has to require a considerable effort (from the artist).
  • It has to show exceptional craftsmanship
  • It has to appeal in some way to my aesthetic ideals
There are probably as many definitions of art out there as there are people, but this is mine (or at least a  shortened version of it). And although I do like this piece, and I do like Ed as a person, this does not tick enough boxes to make it art. Good craft, yes. Art, no.

Those of us that have been involved in Forums for a long time will know that the Art thing has been done to death.
