mini-bowl spiral nebullae
« on: October 23, 2016, 07:34:18 PM »
This form has 18 chuckings and stays with a circular background in sycamore.
The spirals are Archimedes spirals which are more attuned to the overall circular shape.
Overall size 270 x 17mm.
Once again multiple faceplate chuckings applied extremely precisely on an mdf backplate. This time counterbalancing was necessary using an arm with lead flashing as counterweights on my VB36.
I find this a pleasing form. I make no "artistic" claims. This is applied geometry.

C&C always welcome
Regards Nick

The multiple spirals give this piece a lot of movement, to me it actually looks like its turning. A great optical illusion.

If this is the culmination of your earlier post, then that's great, but I suspect that there's going to be more for us to look forward to....this is good.

Like where you are going with this and don't kid yourself, art and geometry are not incompatible. Only problem I have with this is that it makes my eyes go funny, optical illusion effect lol.

I really admire how much effort this must have taken. I really hate to mention this when you're leagues above me in skills, but it looks a bit like a swastika.

Swastica is actually a hindi symbol meaning good fortune and is used as such to this day. The Nazi symbol was adopted for a decade or two and misrepresented.

I quite like the idea, and I can appreciate the thinking behind it. Having said that, when I look at this piece, there is something that disturbs the flow of the smaller circles into the big on in the centre. It's somehow related to the growth in the gaps not being matched with the sane growth in circle diameter, and I am sorry to say, this upsets the visual balance in my eyes. I also think that from the outermost elements there should be at least another 3 (in ever smaller sizes). I realize that these would probably be difficult to turn, and therefore you'd have to us some sort of combination of drilling and milling (with a rounded head).

Thank you for these thoughts.
The human mind is very clever in projecting order upon chaos.
1. spinning illusion. In some 'proof of concept' pieces this was worse with a smaller and/or deeper bowl in the centre giving a 'down the plughole' appearance similar to the British Leyland logo that my contemporaries  will remember. The mirror image was even worse.
2. relationship between spirals and the central bowl. I tried running the centremost mini-bowl into the central bowl on a practice piece but the interface just didn't work either practically or aesthetically. I tried more mini-bowls but, as you suggested, there is a practical issue of turning bowls much smaller and I wanted to stick with turning. I did try extending the line of mini-bowls to overlap the next spiral but it looked cluttered. I tried running the last bowl in a spiral into the outer edge but it looked as though it was a bad mistake in planning.
3. The linear relationship between the bowls (sizes and gaps) is a compromise and I agree that on close scrutiny there are discrepancies. However, with 16 faceplate chucking points I tried to minimise the errors.
I am not quite satisfied with this piece but again  not sure how to develop the concept further against a circular background.
I do have more to post and thank you all for your thoughts so far
Regards
Nick
