Does anyone know of any timber suppliers that have larger thicknesses (ideally 4"+) of maple available?

Hi Paul,
James Lathams Ltd will probably have it.

at lumber yards you will only get 100mm max nothing over the 4" mark as i found out when looking for some myself. bloody expensive at that thickness too.

how much do you need and what species of maple would you be happy with?

i have 5" sycamore squares.

Paul,
I can get you norway maple in log 10-12" diameter and 6 foot long. Cut down 2 weeks ago.

Any good to you?

Latham's supply of Maple us hut and miss I've found, but Whitmores would have it. 4" will be thickest you get though.

they do have plenty of it but the 4" i bought from whitmore was not 100% dry.

it was left in a workshop over the weekend and it started to split.

Why not see if there is some one local who could mill to your specs, they may even have a kiln to for drying.

Perhaps try kentlogs.co.uk?
I've not had any dealings with them but they appear to have a good variety of woods.

Thanks for all the leads, I'm following them up.

What I'm ultimately after is suitable timber to make a 24" bowl so it's going to need some laminating and it will need to be seasoned.

In that case, the norway maple I can get will not be suitable - too wet.

the slabs i have are about that wide ands some are wider.

i'll see if there is one with no cracks.

i've only got 5 left but if you are thinking of laminating then we might be able to do it.

they are 5"+ thick and about 5' long.

Hi John,
The thought had crossed my mind but I lack the machinery such as planer/thicknesser and tablesaw, which wouldn't make it impossible but it would be more time consuming and a little trickier from my perspective.
