Spring cleaning the workshop
« on: April 19, 2016, 09:43:38 AM »
Having acquired a load of cedar, apple and laburnum and having no where to put it and not having any students, demos or commissions for a few days I decided I would spend the day yesterday sorting out my workshop. After a couple of hours realised that it was going to take a lot more than a day. Great way to find those lost bits and pieces, realise my dust extraction needs serious revamping and my tool and accessory storage was, to be polite, c**p. makes me wonder how on earth those people who post images of immaculate workshops manage LOL.

When I tidy the workshop I just seem to end up moving piles of c**p into tidier piles.  So hard to throw stuff out as it might come in handy one day!

Cheers Dave

I think that workshops are like desks.....a tidy desk is a sign of an idle mind.  ;D

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Think my mid must have been working overtime es LOL.

As I do a lot of smaller things for crafters I have shelves full of little bits that, as you say Dave, may come in handy. If I had another shed just for wood I would be OK.

this is exactly what i do. you never know when you are going to need that bit one day and then it sits there for 5 years.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I haven't thrown any wood awayJohn but tidied up and cleaned off things. Also sorted tools out so they can be found when needed. Made racks etc for them so they are (for me at least) neat and tidy. Also cleared my worktop so can use it as I originaly intended. One final bench to sort out tomorrow and I can get back to turning and making a mess.
