Dragons and Eagles
« on: March 16, 2016, 06:38:34 PM »
If you had to choose any 2 creatures to represent the Snowdonia National Park, then you'd be hard pressed to make a better choice than a dragon and an eagle. The dragon has featured in Welsh folklore throughout the last two millennia, and the legend of the Welsh Red Dragon slaying the invading White Dragon, is set in Snowdonia. Furthermore, Snowdonia takes its Welsh name of Eryri from the Welsh word for an eagle.
So here's a 13" decorative platter with a pyrographed design that I've worked into the rim, and a whopping 150 Carat cabochon of Turquoise set into a  beaded cushion mount in the centre....just to give it a splash of colour. There's even a second cabochon set into the rear of the platter, just to make the back a little special, as well.

....that's the beauty of personal opinion, John. None of us knows exactly what is right or wrong, but we each have personal taste. I guess that the trick is to appeal to the personal taste of as many people as possible.

Les,

The first thing I saw as a shield, the rings, the design and the central stone as the shield boss.

Yes I can see it is a wall hanging, but I think it will look great on a wall with a few old weapons arrayed around it.

Thanks Bryan....as it happens, I've not yet put a hanging wire into it, but I almost certainly will.

love the saxon paterning.

Thanks Steve, glad you like it. However, it's not really Saxon, but it's based on earlier Celtic motifs from a time when the Celtic nations were on their westward migration out of Europe. It almost certainly gave rise the the Saxon and Anglo Saxon art that resembles it.

Very nice Les, lots of hard work gone into this. I love the cabochons in it. It must have taken ages to pyro all that detail too, a lot of patience was needed there I think. Top job.

Thanks Gary and Pat, much appreciated.

Gary...the artwork and layout took a couple of hours, and the burning took about another 3 hours in one sitting.

Just had another look at this Les, not the platter but the support, simple but effective. With permission I can use this basic design for displaying at shows?
