Project from musing idea in General Discussion
« on: February 09, 2016, 10:57:25 AM »
Well, made a start on my musing Idea for the big hunk of tree, dragged it into the workshop, somehoe got up onto the lathe bed(getting weak in my old age haha),once up there, saw the first problem,it was cut at an angle,so had to make some wedges to go under the faceplate(will have to take some more pics of them as I forgot to do that),made the first one,put the faceplate on it with a corresponding wedge in other direction to even it up for drilling, job done, drilled log and screwed it on with 75 by 6 mm coach bolts, put it on the spindle nose, guess what, the tailend didn`t line up,so turned it sio the out of line way was at the top, then undid some of the bolts till it lined up with the live tailcentre the way I wanted it and made more wedges to fill the gaps between the coachbolts,re-tightened coachbolts and drove tailcentre iton the other end to take the weight, then had to use an anglegrinder with a wood cutting blade in to take off some of the bits sticking out to far,and bearing in mind my jet lathe has a 20" swing you can tell just how big this is,its now at the rough turned outside, will refine then hollow the cup and the base,or make it a big tazza shaped vase, not decided yet which to do,cheers, Eric.

It's beginning to look like a snowman, Eric, you've even got a little top-hat in him.

Seriously, though, a challenging lump. Take care!

Brave / interesting project !!  Quite a lot of time can be spent just looking at such lumps just thinking how to get the best out of it and how to orientate the wood to optimum effect , I usually start most of my hollow forms from chunks not unlike this , however I do a lot of pre shaping with a chainsaw and then mount it between centres with a 4 prong drive set in to a shallow (1") pre drilled recess then flat off at the tailstock end for mounting on a face plate , whilst between centres you can adjust the piece to suit your desired ends . You should be prepared to expect quite a bit of cracking/warping  with this whilst drying but I hope you achieve  what you intended with it , and enjoy and learn from the experience !!

Look forward to seeing the finished work. In the last photo it looks as if there is a natural split between the branch ends. If so makes sure it is secure after shaping the outside if you decide to hollow out.

Now that's what I call a piece of wood Eric

That would have taken a bit of time to get that round, but that half the fun.

Look forward to seeing how this turns out

Hi Pete,I can see what you mean, but hopefully its just the end of the bark inclusion of the crotch where the branch meets the trunk,I will keep a good eye on it and list for tell tale signs of breakage, cheers,

Eric.

the reason i asked is that it looks too clean for a lathe you've had a while. mine was that colour once but it's now brown in places from flung off danish oil.

latest pics.as you can see I broke my expensive Sovereign hollowing tool, will have to buy a new head for it now, also broke my homemade hollower, haven`t found the end of it yet, will look for it another time, the shaft of this one`s ok,so,ground out a small pear shaped scraper to fit the end of the shaft, working ok so far.

just some more pics, now I`ve made a boring bar as I couldn`t go any deeper with old 1/2" bar,to much vibration, new longer boring bar is 28" long and an inch thick, with both sovereign handles attached its around 5 ft 6ins long, and no vibrations now.

Interesting project Eric, enjoying the work in progress pictures.

Will you hollow the bottom 'bulb' from the top, or turn it around and hollow from the base, or just leave it solid?

Also, what cutter/tip have you put on your home made hollower?

Cheers,
Tom.
