ash and oak vase/vessel
« on: January 10, 2016, 03:31:25 PM »
hello folks

these are not for everyone but they are what I have been making recently.

it started when I saw the images of fractal pyrography on the forums and facebook etc and so I tried to recreate the effect but with a bottle of ink and a straw!

I didn't manage to get the "look" of the pyrography but I do like the look I did get! so I have been experimenting since.

ash vessel

oak vessel

Loved the effect you have got George and keeping the shapes of the vessels simple is right for me. Be interesting to see where else this goes.

You Might Not Have Captured The Fractal Look George...... But You Have Certainly Captured
            Something Special.

George...just as Tony and Di's fractel images appeared to have gown on their vessels, your technique has resulted in an amazingly organic look....it really does look as though this is silhouettes of grasses growing up the bowls.

It may have started out trying to emulate the fractal look but I like this form just as much. How did you stop the ink wanting to follow the grain was it a case of a good coat of sander sealer

I am trying to figure out how the straw comes into this, probably in blowing the drops of ink across the surface. Very nice result, and I agree with Pete, it is highly effective on the simple and elegant forms.

thank you for your kind comments

Derek these were painted first with acrylics then sanded back to give a aged background, so the grain is filled to a point but I have tried it on bare wood and you do have to seal it first.

George,

These are special, not in form or the timber used, but the effect created on the ash from the translucent over colour, the shades of grey, the fine lines looking like reeds or grasses, all in all a very ceramic effect.

Nice work George from trying one thing something else as transpired.

I think the finish looks better with just the two coats grey with just the black over but all very smart.

All the best

Ed

I really like these George, the effect is remarkable.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Lover everything about these....the basic shape of the hollow form, the background work, the three-dimensionality of the paint effect....very sensitively done and very effective.
