Play time at last
« on: December 31, 2015, 02:58:03 PM »
Managed to get into the workshop and have a play yesterday. The first one is an apple hollow form, for obvious reasons it is only hollowed to 10mm thick. It stands 155mm (6") tall and is buffed with carnauba wax. The second has a base of a yew joint that has been turned flat and is a wip so may well change in time.

I am sorry, Pete, but this is too extreme for me. For starters, I would have to change underpants every 10 minutes, but I also have to say I personally don't find the end result all that appealing.

Not to everyones taste Fuzzy. Not as dangerous as it looks either though, judicious aplication of cling film makes it a lot less scary and of course going gentle when hollowing.

Pete,

I'm still jealous of your supply of old growth Apple wood.

I do like these forms of yours, all the voids and bark and worm tracks and 'polishing cloth!

Flatterer LOL. Where'#s the polishing cloth? Thought I'd got it all out.

Pete,

top photo, look to the crack in the back wall of the vessel, there's a big thread just hanging there.

beautiful piece Pete,I love this sort of work and the skill involved to turn it without smashing it to smithereens, one question, did it split before or after you turned it,cheers,

Eric.

Thank you Eric. It was already split when I put it on the lathe. I turn the outside and sand it totally then wrap well in industrial cling film before hollowing. Once you start to go through the sides where it is narrower you need to turn the speed up (sounds backwards but slower speeds and you are more likely to catch) then hollow out as far as you want to. If the spit goes completely the cling film holds it together so you don't get bits flying off all over the place keeping it safe. Not something I would do at a club demo but with face mask and listening to the sound all the time it is a lot safer than it looks.

Hooray Pete's back :)

You might need to have a pair of my 3.5 X specks so Bryan can't find anything :) :) :) :)

Love it

All the best

Thank you Ed. I had to really scrutinise it to see the fibre in the flesh let alone in the photo LOL.

The more I look at the first piece the more I like it, not that I needed to look many times.

I am still not sure about the shape of the second one :D
