Spirit Of Ecstasy
« on: October 12, 2015, 04:02:04 PM »

Spirit Of Ecstasy..... Flying Lady....Silver Lady..... and there is more  :)

I was approached some weeks ago to do a commission for 2 plinths .... Normally I do not do commissions but this one intrigued
me.... as we were allowed to design them..... the only stipulation was they must be plain and from Walnut. We were trying to
give the sense of speed with the shape but also keeping them simple...... They are office Decorations/ paper weights, for
   the Lady`s 2 sons.
   Comments most welcome

I think you've absolutely achieved that.  Love them.

Hi Toni and Di

hope you are both well.

Great work/job done.  The simple design and off set form together with composition is a fine example of how simplicity has impact without  the need for bells and whistles. The shape turned and the subject fit very well indeed, thank you for sharing.

Hi Di & Tony,
I like these very much as Mark said " No Bells and Whistles " another great idea as they are paper weights for a desk is turning a couple of pens out of the same wood.

Think you cracked it there Tony. Simple. elegant and very suitable. The interior of the cars was usually walnut burr so even more applicable.

Thank You Very Much.. John .. Pete ..For  commenting very much appreciated

A mock up was made for the Lady to view on delivery of the 2 silver lady`s ...... And She was very pleased with how they looked.
On completion they were let unglued so that final decisions could be made when they were collected. They have flown off now.
      Kind Regards

stunningly simple and yet so lovely.

it's just personal preference but i would have mounted them facing 180 degrees to give the further effect of flying.

I think you nailed it....the detail in the mounts is too much to try to compete with, so keeping the plinths simple was absolutely the right way to go, and their shapr just adds to the dynamics of the pieces.
Great

Thank You Very Much .. Les and George    Much Appreciated

After discussing the shape before we had the pieces I decided to off centre turn it to give it Lift & the sense of speed.
The photo is not picking up that the base is undercut , I have posted a pic of the mock up ..... very tempted to leave the
base highly polished but in the end for peace of mind put some black felt on ..... something I would not normally do.

Hi  John .... Tried a bit of upselling of the pens out of the same piece of wood...... The Lady did not bite   :) :)
  Kind Regards
  Tony d

very nice - just a thought it may look good for the base to be turned so the wings of the lady are over the lower part of the base- this might give a greater sweep of speed?
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

Thank you Steve (w) ...... Before it was all glued up we did try them with the Lady facing the other way... with the wings over the
lower part..... its hard to explain really... but they looked sort of odd   :)
