Fun Day Just Wood
« on: October 04, 2015, 09:24:40 PM »

Went to my mate Toms ( flames on here ) Saturday to collect a couple of 4ft slabs by 18" wide from an ash tree he cut down during
the week. I started to rough turn it and wow quilting so had a fun day with some of the off cuts. The beakers are 5"x 3"
the h /f  is 6 1/2" x 2 1/2" . They are all turned very thin and spin dried the beakers have tretex to water proof.
H / F Danish Oil requires more coats & buffing.
Comments as always welcome Tony d

I love the H/F (assuming you mean the hollow form) The wood has a wonderful grain.
Can I ask what to ment by "spin dry" I hope this didn't involve the tumble dryer and assume you're using the lathe.
I haven't turned such a large piece of green word and would love to know a little more about how you went about this.

Cheers.

Ralph

Yes it is hollow form Ralph and I am pleased to say no harm came to the spin dryer. ;D

The method I used was ..... It is spun at high speed on the lath while I have a rather long tea break, The main thing being
is the walls need to be very thin and with an even thickness throughout , with no ridges , if at some point you have to walk away
from it with the lath off cover the piece in cling film. Oil can be applied to the outside to help to stop it cracking, either after
or during spinning .  Hope that makes sense.
   Kind Regards

Hi Tony.
Thanks for getting back to me.
So you would turn the piece a almost to completion then "spin dry" I assume this technique is not suitable for thicker pieces?

Many Thanks

Ralph

Does it have to be tea, or will coffee be Ok.

Tony,

I'm really rather struck by the 2 wooden beakers. Do they work well?

Ralph  ......         Coffee is even better as long as its a espresso

3mm is about your limit for thickness . Holding with a small foot and when finished turn off as much of the
foots thickness as possible to allow the base to dry.

They still need a couple more coats of treatex Bryan before I no for certain that they are waterproof.
But it has worked well in the past. Turned 2 more today from the sap wood to see how that works.
    Kind Regards

The simplicity of the beakers works well for me and they look functional and comfortable to use.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

A bit more info .... For the first 2 days leave all turnings in a cool room ..... then bring inside until dry

A bit more info on the process for the beakers

They were drilled out with the fostner bit (cheating I Know ) which made getting an even wall thickness a lot easier, it is best to
oil the outside only ( the inside was coated only for the photo ) when finished I put a pudding pot in the top with a hole in
the base for air circulation with some weights to help hold the top round and stood it on a grill to let air circulate round the base
with it being thicker . I will now leave them like this for a good week to dry and set.
Once Again Hope It Makes Sense.
  Kind Regards
  Tony d

These are awesome Tony! -it is some really great Ash.
I have offered some of this for sale, fearful I wouldn't have chance to use it in a reasonable time, but seeing the above, I might have to hang on to more of it :-)
Some pics of the raw material...

-Yeah I'm about.

Some pics of the felling, not me doing it but a friend: Tree Surgery Tim. It made a hell-of-a thud / splash when it hit the ground / stream. As you can see quite a big'n, the 3' bar was just long enough.
(did try to upload these the over day, but the forum doesn't like *.jpeg, grr)
