some more spirals
« on: September 30, 2015, 09:46:35 PM »
This has been a dead loss as far as turning goes as this is the first one I have finished and its darn near Christmas again.
Thought I had long run out of the is burl, but after a major clean up found a couple of small pieces. Yay!
150 mm dia and stand about 110 mm high [6x4"] finished with two coats of  Danish oil my own recipe.

Don't get me wrong: this is a marvellous piece of wood and I certainly do admire your technique and skills, but for me there's too much going on here. My eyes can't decide whether to explore the burr features or follow the spiral lines. Still, a very nice piece of work.

The carved lines spoil it for me without them it would have been quite nice.

Like the wood, like the shape and like the carving, just not all together, have to agree it is perhaps a step too far.

This must be a marmite piece ...... Because we both love everything about it...... You have made a great job with the carving Hughie
Bet  there was a lot of resin in there.
    Kind Regards

Hi Hughie

Good to see you back.

This piece has brought me back time and time again today, initially I too thought the carving was too much. On looking again I feel that the picture does not do the piece justice, I think you have probably used a flash or bright light which in turn has made the piece look very harsh. Combined with this the flash/lighting has drowned out the subtle contrasts between the carving and wood that I expect we would see in natural light.

So coming back again and again, I like the piece and would love to see it up close.

Thanks for sharing.

Hughie,

It is a busy piece of timber, the gum line and gum pockets are probably what is causing consternation. Did you chose to photograph and post this side because the other is a little mire plain?

I like it and like the look of the stepped fluting you've used as opposed to your normal radius'd flutes. They give a different break up ov light over the surface.
