Devon open studio's
« on: September 16, 2015, 08:04:34 AM »
The weekend we visited my brother Chris's workshop in Ashburton on the edge of Dartmoor as he is involved in the Devon open Studio's.
Chris is a time served joiner and furniture maker who also makes very fine woodturnings and has been making bespoke joinery for nearly 50 years.
Here are a few pics of his work and workshop.

As it happens I visited a few open studios ( including the one above )  thought the turnings were of a similar style as your own , less colour though !!   Also visited Tobias Kayes studio to see an impressive display of his sounding bowls , Heather  Janch's  driftwood horses were amazing also , and visited a good blacksmith as well , it is great to see so many people creating great things in sheds all over the place , inspiring stuff  !!    .. I think that these 'open studio' themes are great. Wiltshire is full of gifted artists and crafts people, why isn't there anything like this going on here, at least in my section of it around Devizes.

Can't see all your brothers work too well in the photo George but what I can see looks impressive. Your family seems to breed dark horses LOL.

There are similar open studios in Somerset ( Oct 3-18 ) and Dorset early next year ( I think !! )  good to see other crafts as well as wood ....Good people scratching a living doing what they love ... mostly ....

What amazes me is the amount of stock that your brother has. Having said that, it all looks like good stuff and well finished.

We too have an open doors event going on up here in North Wales, although I must admit that the first two weekends were rather quiet!

Les

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Hi Les

He has been working extra hours to build up his stock for the Open Studios.
It is all extremely well made and well over half of it is sold and has red dots on and people will be picking their pieces at the end of the event.

Good display George

Chris's work is some of the finest I have seen, but then being a quality cabinet maker/joiner/turner for his working life you don't expect much else.
