I was actually thinking about a pearl without a hole, so it will have to be glued on. OTOH, since it sits right on the top, I can just lay it there to see how it works. I'll keep you guys posted.

The problem with a pearl with a hole is the hole goes all the way through and will therefore be visible at the top.

Go have a look at a jewellers for earrings, a small pair of pearl earring studs come with a stem you can push into a drilled hole and no hole at the other side.

True but it can be fine if you use a long silver pin which gointo the wood and also gves an extra level of adhesion. The pins come in varying lengths up to about 2".
