A couple of bits of ash ..
« on: July 26, 2015, 07:55:23 PM »
Recently finished a few very different bits of Ash , 1st is a 17" platter , which is something I do not make very often , taken from a crotch to show the lovely effect of the grain where 2 stems merge ... 2nd is an oddity , a 10" dia  dome shaped lump ( probably from an occlusion of a branch stub )  I have hollowed the inside to a nice smooth . typical bowl finish but left the exterior untouched ... how did I hold it then ?? ... Hi Terry.

I love the first one but the second one does not do anything for me.
Just personal taste.

I'm with you George. I thing the first piece is wonderful, but I'm not so keen on the second. A bit too chunky for my taste.
I would like to have seen a photograph on the platter lying flat, as I think there is more shape in the piece that is not seen in the image. It has a beautiful grain, and you have achieved a fabulous finish.

No change here...the first one is magnificent, but that second piece is just too heavy. I can see that you've maintained a contrast between the beauty of the grain on the insode of the bowl, and the abundance of natural features on the outside.....but the weight of the bowl is just too high a price to pay for that contrast.

Well the platter is one stunning piece of wood which you have turned to perfection.

Unlike the others so far I like the bowl I don't mind chunky at all, and the way that its been turned to leave the bark intact on the outside very cleaver.

Having given this some thought I guess that it could be done one of two ways, HMG or mounted in a friction cup.

Which ever way its nice work Terry

All the best

i'm with ed on this one, they are both nice. don't like really glossy finishes myself but that's just personal taste.

i presume the chunky one was mounted in a jam chuck?

TWiG,

The platter stands out for me, the grain of the crotch is very well defined and displayed in your turning.

I have only one issue with the bowl, I'm not sure about having the rough bark on a dining table or other display area. But as a puzzle on how it was held and turned - nope, you've got me on that one...

If I turn pieces with the base all bark etc I use HMG on a wooden disc with wedges if needed. I usually bring the tailstock up then and take out most of the centre before finishing of the middle bit.

If it was me I would make a ring of hot melt glue and use my new super dooper Vacuum chuck

never used a vacuum chuck so this may be a silly question. Would there be enough suction created if it is onto bark to hold it? It is very porous with lots of little cracks and holes in ot.

Having given this a little more thought I would cut a ring if Poly carb the same size as my chuck and then hot melt glue the ring to the burr and then use my new Super dooper Vacuum chuck.
Easy

Love the top one Terry, very beautiful, also like the bottom one would look great in a contemporary room.

I would hold this with the bark/base in a large shallow cone and turn it with the center in place leaving a small stem which I would removed afterwards and blend with an arbor in a drill and finish by hand.
