Windsor chair seat
« on: May 04, 2015, 07:50:28 PM »
Any green woodworkers out there ? I am staring to make a Windsor chair, and I have a great source of green ash for the legs etc., but I am stuck for the seat, in the sad absence of elm what would you recommend and where would I get it from?
Thanks
Ron

American windsor chairs have usually a seat made of a softer wood such as tulip or white pine which is much more confortable to the bottocks but that is also much thicker to make up  for the lack of strength compared to elm.

My two are made entirely of ash which, I believe, came from Yandles. ( they were made by an old boy who has a workshop in the grounds of Yandles, not by me. )

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Thanks for the replies. I reckon on ash as I can get fresh cut planks from a local woodland. Just have to be patient and wait two years for it to season!

I was at the NT house at Tynesfield the weekend before last. They have a whole Bodgers encampment permanently set up.

Also they run chair making courses, there was one just finishing when i was there, they used Ash to form their chair seats.

I think you can get the seats from Axminster as they do courses on Winser chair making.

try this guy, he likes his elm and usually has wide enough stock for seats or you can get it cut to order.
