Prototypes
« on: April 17, 2015, 01:44:50 PM »
When asked by a gallery to possibly submit some pieces what I didn't expect was to be asked for something I hadn't done before. OK...they wanted saki sets. These are some of the prototypes that I have made up quickly purely to show different styles designs etc. All based on original sets as far as shapes etc is concerned and they won't be for sale as is. I don't know if anyone else has ever done these before but IMHO some designs work in pottery or ceramics but don't translate to wood so well. I have mixed and matched to show different types of saki pots, cups etc. See what you all think.

Thanks Steve, yes still got some odds and ends which are big enough for smaller things like these.

All good but I think I prefer the third set. It may just be the camera angle but the cups look a bit wider and more 'open' ?

Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Pete,

I've got to go for the first set. The colour of the cups is dramatic (not sure how easy they would be to drink out of though with that big lip) and the ewer has a very deco feel to it.

Interesting, Pete.....I recently saw a very striking saki pot and cup in ceramics and am itching to have a go at making it in wood. There's all sorts of design issues to overcome because of the complexity....then I saw this and thought, 'Keep it simple, Les'. After all, that's often the essence of eastern ethics, so spot-on, Pete.

Each set has its own merits Pete...... Our preference is the  second set. It seems to look a lot finer.

Thanks for the response. I agree that the lips on the brown oak ones could perhaps be a bit thinner. Interesting that there is so much variation in oreference amongst you all.
Personally I often find that the smaller the turning, the more difficult it is to get proportions right. Just waiting to see if any are what the gallery owner had in mind.

I to like the second set but also have a liking to the last set. Just goes to show that everyone sees things differently. I hope they sell well for you.

Interesting challenge. For me 2 & 4 best reflect the impression of typical Japanese Saki drinking sets. I really like the delicacy of these two as opposed to the more robust feel of the other two. If I had to choose a favourite it would be number 2.
