Tinted Horse chestnut
« on: April 04, 2015, 12:11:45 PM »

                                             Spalted Horse Chestnut Burr
It`s been very enjoyable and a lot of fun experimenting with Acrylic in general and also using Acrylics to Marble....In between we have
been experimenting again with different Techniques and  methods of staining Andromeda  Orion. This piece has taken us back
6+years to our roots using a colour wash. Possibly a little darker than we hoped for but as always the reaction with stain on wood
cannot be guaranteed...... Technically this Vase is not ours it was turned by a friend who asked if we would colour it for him.
As Always Comments Are Welcome  The Vase 11" high     Di And Tony.

Great effect Tony. Not too sure about the colour but picks out the figure brilliantly. Well done! :) How have you done it? The only time I gave a colour wash to a piece, I tinted some thinned, home made shellac button polish with Chestnut spirit stain. This not only coloured the wood but sealed it at the same time.It turned out ok but it didn't have the same amount of figure as yours.
just one last cut and it will be perf...oh boll.....!

A spalted burr, hands up anyone not jealous.

Tony, after you sent me the copy of how you do that, I had a go. I still can't achieve anywhere near this effect though.

The way you pop the grain and bring out the rays and flame is beautiful to behold. I am encouraged to keep trying.

I always think that the test of good finishing on a ripple like this, is whether it looks more like wood, or folded linen - and this piece just looks so like folded linen that it's difficult to believe that the surface isn't three-dimensional. It's a piece I'd love to hold and explore.

Bryan.... Hope To See You At Yandles.... I am sure someone will point us out.

LES....   It has now gone to its original owner ..... it was very hard to part with though.

Alan... If you have any old Woodturning Magazines... Tony wrote a few articles in late 2010 early 2011 under the heading
Skill & Projects. Workshop Know How Its No 224 Dying &Spraying.. Hope that Helps.
The additional photo is of the piece in the mag. The wood used on this and the new piece are from the same tree found
          on the council tip.

If someone told me these were images of planets taken through a telescope, I'd not argue.

I'll make sure I look you up next Saturday at Yandles. I'm easy to identify, look for the Dragonfly.

I'd just like to add my comments about these. They are stunning and bring out the wood figure beautifully. I will look out that edition of the magazine and put the technique on my list of things to do. Thanks for sharing and well done. Malcolm.
