curved toolrests
« on: March 27, 2015, 02:22:04 PM »
i have a set of large bowls to turn that are beyond my 14" straight rest i've been using up till now.

i looked at purchasing a robust 12" curved rest but amazon won't send it to the uk as they say it has sharp edges.

I did not like the rest that came with my lathe. £10 down a local engineering company and I had 2 to my spec.
Curved might be a bit more but probably cheaper than importing one.

agreed, i have a mate who runs and engineering company but he has been on site since christmas and i've not seen him at the bowling alley where we bowl in the same league.

this has forced me in to looking for a non custom tool rest and i have to say i do like the look of the robust one and have not heard a bad thing said about it.

Robust lathes and tools rests are now being sold in the UK by Phil Irons. I have been talking to him about some toolrests for my 3520.
I think he may have to get them from the states for you(us) as he doesn't seem to be carrying stuff in stock yet.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

The Toolpost might be able to help as they sell Jet kit.

If not, talk to your local blacksmith -they will usually make one up to your spec for very little money (in comparison to shipping in from the US)

Happy to recommend a blacksmith who is not too far away from you.

As I read it; "Each Tool rest is topped with a hardened steel bar" I don't even think you could call the end sharp ... Just someone didn't want to go to the trouble of packing & mailing ...  ::) ..

it was amazon (according to mum) who were blocking it but you are right, i would not call any part of the tool rest sharp at all. pity really as it worked out at £66 rather than the £82+p&p that i'll have to pay if phil irons has any.

i am sure any fabricator would make you one to your spec for alot less -
