Membership Card.
« on: March 05, 2015, 03:44:11 PM »
I have seen mention of a membership card but have no recollection of receiving one when I joined back in October.
The badge I ordered at the same time arrived and I remember that so I am not dementing.  :)

If there is one can someone tell me what it looks like ?

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi Graham....the old type of membership card (credit card type) has been discontinued and the new type peels off the letter that each member gets, through their club, when they renew their subscription at the year end/beginning.
Did you have that letter?

This is correct the membership card is attached to the letter sent out when membership is taken out/renewed.

I will have to ransack the 'office' but I doubt if I kept it.

OK, so maybe I am dementing, but I am doing it efficiently.

I had pinned the letter to the office noticeboard,  :)

When I attempted to remove the card from the letter, it delaminated and only the front layer came away.

I  presume that the card being integral with the letter is  more efficient (and cheaper) than the old system but the card itself isn't as robust

I don't think I will bother trying to separate it, just leave it where it is.

If one needs to carry the card about then it's a size uniform with all the other cards.

Advantage of the new card for members: it's thinner than the old one so wil take up less space in one's wallet.

Disadvantage: delaminates and less robust.

Perhaps the letter should  provide guidance on removing the card from the letter to avoid delamination.

Some of the companies that offer our members a discount will ask to see the card. In my old club I had arranged tool discounts from a local merchant and the club members had to produce a valid card to get it.
Has anyone thought that you could always cut the card out with a pair of scissors?

The old cards were intended to be kept for a number of years but I had many people asking for replacements because they had either lost them or their membership number had worn off. The new cards are cheaper and much easier because I don't have to write each one by hand. Also, with the old cards, I had quite a few people who quoted their membership number as "2014" as that was what was written on the sticker! Hopefully the new cards make things clearer.

If you have managed to destroy your card trying to separate it from the letter, ask your branch membership secretary to request a new one for you next time they send me some renewals or new memberships. If you are an individual member, contact me direct and I will send you a replacement.
