Black cherry bowls
« on: February 26, 2015, 12:51:21 AM »
Two utilitarian bowls turned from black cherry. The first is 10 x6 inch and the second 9x4.
C and C appreciated.

I like the first bow but do not like the stand it is on I think it would look better on a plain surface.

Agree with George here, the bowl stands on it's own and the plinth is IMHO superfluous, even detracts from it.  The bowl has a lovely shape and the decorative work puts it into that 'country' class, be nice to see a picture of it on its own.

Hi Sevilla,
I like the Bowl very much and I think your decoration adds a lot to it but I cannot see why you have stood it on what looks to me like a cake stand.

This is getting boring but I have to agree with the others. A nice bowl and a nice cake stand. Is there a reason for combining them ?

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I thank you for the comments.
I used the cake stand just to raise the bowls to better show the entire profile which, I believe is the essence of a bowl. Without the stand a foot gets hidden or the entire bottom profile does not show well. But I undestand your point and I' m posting a picure of the first bowl by itself.

Lovely wood and both bowls are very nicely done, with just enough pyro

Now I know the stand is just there as a visual aid I agree with its use entirely. Good idea.

Hi Sevilla,
I take your point about raising the Bowl up to show the shape and the foot perhaps just drape a cloth over the stand so it doesn't all look

like one piece and the wood of the cake stand will not distract the eye from the main object I hope this makes sense.

John, the drape idea is excellent. How I did not think to that! Thanks.

I like both of them. The decoration makes them that extra bit special. I wouldn't call them utilitarian bowls though. That makes them sound plain and practical. With the decoration etc they look attractive too!

Thank you all.
I made mine your suggestions and prepared a drape on a upside-down bowl (I'll improve this!).
Here is the result.

The flask captures the grain of the wood well, and the drawing almost has the simplicity of Japanese are about it. Your pyro work is so delicate.
