« on: January 21, 2015, 07:09:46 PM »
Free wood that is my favorite This is a load of Mulberry I have been given.
Today we loaded my sons van with over two tons and tomorrow we are going back for the rest we recon there is over five tons with today's load.
This is some of the nicest Mulberry I have ever seen

Well scored George ! Most wood nowadays seems to be reserved for some one with a wood burner , I have seen people fighting over it !   That's a lot of wood of one species to get through , I am often in that situation  , but I can't turn it all so loads goes to waste ( firewood )  Your going to be roughing out a lot for some time !  Terry..

Hi Eric.
Unfortunately there is no such thing as free it took two of us and two vans two days to pick it up and put it outside my workshop.
it will take an even longer time to cut it up into blanks and end seal it.
I only accept free wood if it is something unusual like Mulberry ,Yew Walnut or something like that.If I want Ash beech Oak or Sycamore it is easier to go to the wood yard and buy it all slabbed up and air dried.

Have you turned any of this wood George? looks to have a nice colour to it.
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

Mark Sanger and I roughed out a load of it and it is as hard as a dogs head.
Stunning grain but we had to sharpen tools one every bowl sometimes more that once on the large ones.I have a load more here to rough out if you want some tooling practice LOL

thanks for the speedy reply George - i tried turning some white Oak which was like steel the tool never even touched it so its back on the shelf - for now i am sticking to soft woods.

Hardwoods are just as easy to turn as soft woods you just need sharp tools.
You have done the right thing put it away until you have the confidence to use it without wasting it.Practice on cheap throw away wood.
