Latest Bowl
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:46:07 AM »
This is a bowl made from a piece of Horse chestnut (see under general discussions) It is 300mm dia (12in) finished with acrylic spray then burnished with burnishing cream. I have left the bark inclusion as a feature.

Horse Chestnut is one of the 'softest' hardwoods I know, in it's standing state as a tree it's wood is weak and breaks easily and as there are so many standing compared to other trees, I've always assumed the reason was the wood was useless and nevr thought to try do anything with the stuff.

Your bowl proves some of my assumtions wrong, it's a loverly piece youve produced there,

What methods did you use to cut it and get that finish.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Hi Katchin,
Iuse a Sorby texturing tool, The bigger one.
dr4g0nfly,  I use Horse Chestnut a lot, I like the wood it is quite soft and if left in store for a while it spalts nicely. As the wood has no commercial use it is readily available. Several of my colleagues use and like it, You need sharp tools as the grain plucks very readily. Its takes all finishes very well.
