« on: December 22, 2014, 01:53:56 PM »
just a curious question really.

i just turned a couple of thin ones both 8" across in brown oak and field maple and both weighed 100g but the field maple is wet so don't know what it will get down to.

whats your lightest?

The gaps and cracks in some of my bowls don't weigh anything at all  ;) ;)

Actually I have no idea! I just posted that to illustrate that the weight on its own is pretty meaningless!

ok i'll re ask the question, what is your lightest bowl with a diameter of 6-8".

how thin can you get it and was it turned wet or dry.

I have three nine inch bowls. Each one weighs 14 pounds.
Regards
Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hmm  --  Don't have anything to weigh in gms but I have an unfinished bowl at 3 1/2oz (wall = 1.5mm) and a finished bowl at 7oz (wall = 2mm), have to say that this is the thinnest I have turned to date. The finished one is beech, not much care taken with it as I was just playing around with thinness of walls. This tree was blown down in our lane back in the spring.

100g ! fair way to go then. The bowl is 6" x 2-3/4" it was turned fairly wet hence the shrinkage that can be seen.

the trick might be to use a light wood.

i had a bit of brow oak from an ancient tree and turned it wet to 2mm it was 8x3" and it was 100g when dry.

i'm going to use some sycamore and catalpa and see what i get.
